Subject: Elections – partial renewal of the GAC-EPA Committee and an Auditor for the years 2022 and 2023

Dear Madam, Dear Sir, Dear Members of the GAC-EPA,

In Spring 2021 sanitary conditions and the rules applied at CERN did not allow us to hold our Annual General Meeting in person. The same applies to our traditional end-of-year drink which cannot be organized this year. We regret this very much. Even though access to CERN and ESO was complicated or even impossible for most of us, the GAC-EPA committee members have nevertheless been very active. The Autumn 2021 Bulletin – in preparation – is witness to the work effected by your representatives in various committees and matters – CHIS, pensions, taxation, etc.

Let us return to the subject of this letter, the partial renewal of the Committee and the election of an Auditor.

For the annual elections and in conformity with Article 19 of our Statutes, we sent you a call for candidatures on August 25th 2021 for the replacement of twelve members of the Committee and one Auditor. Within the time limit we received nine candidatures for the Committee – 8 coming from retiring members + 1 new candidature – and no candidature for the post of Auditor. Since the number of candidatures for the Committee was fewer than the number of vacancies, the Committee at its meeting on November 5th 2021 decided on a tacit election, as has been done previously.

For the election of an Auditor, the retiring Auditor, Adrianus van Praag, has accepted to extend his mandate for one year; the Committee has confirmed this extension. If anyone has any objections to these decisions of the Committee, we invite our CERN and ESO members to inform us by addressing a letter to the above address within 15 days of the receipt of this letter. After this date the following persons will be declared elected for the period January 1st 2022 to December 31st 2023: Erik Allaert, Philippe Bloch, Philippe Charpentier, Claude Genier, Monique Häusermann, David Jacobs, Catherine Laverrière, Jean-François Michaud, André Naudi.

At the same time our ESO members are electing their representative to the Committee amongst the announced candidates. Since there is only one candidature from a member of ESO (Erik Allaert), we propose that our ESO members accept his tacit election as their representative. If an ESO member has any objections, we invite them to address them to us in the same way as mentioned above. We give our heartfelt thanks to the three retiring members for their engagement over the last years to the GAC-EPA. Thank you Gertjan Bossen, Bernard Ducret and Françoise Thévenet. All three have invested much time and energy over many years. Since we shall not be able to see each other before the end of 2021, we wish you all the very best for the end-of-year celebrations, and hope to see you in spring 2022 for our Annual General Meeting.
